Description
Student J is from the South of Ireland. He did his secondary schooling through the medium of Irish and left school at fifteen after the Intermediate Certificate to go to work. He was imprisoned in Portlaoise Prison in County Laois Ireland in 1982 where he was involved in political education programmes run by Republican prisoners and taught Irish and Maths to other prisoners. He studied for his Leaving Certificate before starting his Open University studies with the Social Sciences foundation course in 1985. He then studied Mathematics and Computing courses graduating in 1992. He also studied ‘What is Europe’ and ‘The Effective Mana...ger’ with The Open University. He moved to the Training Unit in Dublin before his release and then attended University on day release. After graduating with a Masters degree he taught part-time and subsequently became a full-time Academic.
