Description
Thomas Babington Macaulay was a British historian and politician. He held the positions of Secretary at War and Paymaster-General in the Whig Governments under Lord Melbourne and Lord Russell respectvely. His most well known written work is 'The History of England from the Accession of James the Second' which was published in four volumes during his lifetime. At the time of his death, aged 59, he was working on a fifth volume. He was a founding trustee of the National Portrait Gallery which was established in 1856.
