Description
John Henry Newman was an English Cardinal deacon. Originally an Anglican priest, he converted to Roman Catholicism in 1845. He was instrumental in founding the Catholic University of Ireland in 1854. He was the author of works such as 'Tracts for the Times' and the poem 'The Dream of Gerontius'. He also wrote hymns including 'Lead Kindly Light'. Cardinal Newman was canonised as a Saint in the Catholic Church in 2019.

Description: In his letter to Sampson Low, Cardinal Newman explains that a verse included in the hymn he wrote entitled 'Lead Kindly Light' and included in the 'Hymnal Companion' was not written by him. The additional fourth verse was in fact written by Edward Henry Bickersteth who edited the 'Hymnal Companion', published by Sampson Low in 1870.

Letter note: This letter has a related note written by the Reverend Frederick William Low who compiled the volumes in c.1913: "John Henry (Cardinal) Newman, the famous leader of the Oxford Tractarian Movement of 1833, joined the Roman Catholic Church in 1845, and was made a Cardinal by Leo XIII in 1879. Born, February 21st. 1801, died August 11th 1890."
