Description
William Mitchell is from Belfast. His schooling was disrupted by the conflict and he left school at fifteen with no qualifications. He was imprisoned in the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) Compounds of Long Kesh (the Maze and Long Kesh Prison) in 1975 aged seventeen. During his time in Compound 21 he studied for his O Levels gained a coaching badge in Athletics and studied The Open University short Community Education course ‘Health Choices’. After his release in 1987 he was a Youth and Community worker with communities across the Shankill and Falls Road gaining first a diploma from the YMCA George Williams College then an undergraduate d...egree and finally a PhD from the University of Ulster in Youth and Community Work. At the time of interview in 2017 William was Project Director for the UVF civilianisation programme Action for Community Transformation and a lecturer with YCMA George Williams College.
