Description
"Mr. Avery examines the traditions of patronage, the context within which the early Medici sponsored certain religious building in Florence in a way which was entirely normal for well-to-do ci...tizens; he traces the expansion and the changing nature of their benefactions and commissions as the family fortunes and political influence rose; and, finally, reflects upon the place of Lorenzo I. " Giovanni, Cosimo, Piero, Lorenzo - the successive heads of the Medici were each faced with different conditions and they had differing interests. Lorenzo may not have commissioned work on the scale that was possible for his predecessors, but in his role of connoisseur, humanist, and man of letters, he was undoubtedly a powerful factor in the shaping of the Florentine High Renaissance." The talk is illustrated by passages from contemporary sources."
