Description
In this Arts Review '89, Trevor Herbert traces the rise and fall of the Cyfarthfa Brass Band - a band privately owned by Mr Robert Thomson Crawshay, in Merthyr Tydfil in the latter half of the nine...teenth century. The development of this band was unique, but by the end of the century it had become just another brass band and was, in embryo, what we now call the brass band movement. Its history and repertoire help to illuminate life in Merthyr Tydfil and the range of popular music available in this period.
