"The programme discusses "the status of women" by examining the provisions made for their education. It shows the limited careers open to middle class women restricted by the convent...ions of a 'leisuired class'. As a parallel to the fictional experience of Jane Eyre, the progranme examines the actual role of governesses and the gradual development of secondary and higher education for women which made possible a greater freedoin of choice for the middle class woman who wanted to work."
