This radio programme aims to show how Sullivan made allusions to the musical styles of "high" art-forms in his operettas and to relate these allusions to the various influences that Sulli...van experienced as his musical career developed in Victorian England. The programme gives a brief outline of Sullivan's upbringing and early musical training, and provides background material on his musical approach to the composition of operettas, with the use of musical extracts. In more general terms, the programme also provides examples of the introduction of "high" art material into a more 'popular' context, thus illustrating one particular form of cultural transmission and adaptation in Victorian society.
