They were ruled by rich aristocrats of trade like Joos Vijd, the altarpiece's donor, and they were often at odds with the Duke, or their neighbours. They too aspired to becoming patrons of artists such as Van Eyck, but in the early 15th century, when the Ghent altarpiece was painted, the trade of the cities was being taken over by foreign residents, and there were popular risings too. Public display and artistic patronage on a grand scale, was matched by trouble, economic decline and religious quietism.
