Footage description: Sir John Summerson discusses Batty Langley's influence on eighteenth century craftsmen and architecture. He looks briefly at his life and in detail at the aims and content of ten of his books. In particular. Sir John discusses the importance of The Builder's Chest Book in giving a firm grounding in the five Orders, The City and Country Builder's and Workman's Treasury of Designs for its pattern-book designs which are to be found surviving in quite modest houses all over the country and Gothic Architecture Improved by Rules and Proportions for Batty's complete idiosyncratic system of Gothic designing which was perhaps his greatest success.
