Description
Martyn Hammersley talks to Paul Willis. Willis argues that the counter culture is a part of a wider working class culture. He discusses the 'rationality' of this culture: he sees it as the means by... which lower stream pupils make sense of and make bearable their lives in school, The central irony is, however, that ultimately the culture is not 'counter'. For though this culture causes problems for teachers in schools eventually it acts to reproduce the class structure and thereby the structure of the existing society. The programme looks particularly at Willis' attempt to combine an ethnographic approach to research with a Marxist theoretical perspective on the social world.
