The story begins last century in a small town in Italy, where Maria Montessori was born. Her father was a government official, her mother a well educated, free thinking woman who always supporter h...er daughter in what she did. When the time came for higher education, Maria Montessori's choice was unusual for the time. She was one of that scattered band of pioneers, like Elizabeth Garrett Anderson in this country, who had to break the rules (which seem so amazingly unfair to us now) to get into medical school.
