Description
Dr. Angus Calder traces the development of the romantic hero through the 18th century both in Britain and in Europe, with special reference to Conrad, the Corsair. He shows that the popular idea of... the Byronic hero is a rather mistaken reading and that Byron himself neither recommends the so-called Byronic hero as a model nor was he the prototype of this figure. Indeed Dr. Calder suggests that Shelley was more like the Byronic hero than Byron himself.
