Nigel Blake discusses the nature and impact of Baudelaire's art criticism and looks into the meaning of the quality 'imagination' which the poet-critic advocated for modern artists. Who were the pa...inters whom Baudelaire found wanting and which ones did he admire . What light does his singling out of the draughtsman Constantin Guys throw in Baudelaire's concepts of 'imagination' and 'modern life'. In his poetry we find examples of Baudelaire's interest in artificiality, 'correspondences' and a sense of beauty in what might appear ugly. Nigel Blake shows how these complex elements that contribute to Baudelaire's criticism and poetry can be seen as having much in common with works by Manet - for example the seemingly contradictory Victorine Meurend in a Matador's costume of 1852 , and why painters like Ingres, Delacroix and Courbet did not win Baudelaire's approval.
