Footage description: Classroom scene shows small groups of immigrant children whose teacher, Mrs. Hirad is giving vocabulary practice with the help of a doll's house. Bill Prescott, voice over, notes that she is using behaviour shaping strategy. To clarify the strategy a 'laboratory' situation is created with a teacher and six 11 year old children in the OU television studio. They work through programmed texts and are given stars. Prescott, voice over, uses animation to identify the processes at work in behaviour shaping. The first sequence with Mrs. Hirad's group is repeated. Another strategy: guided discovery, is illustrated In the 'laboratory' situation, showing the teacher involving the children in measuring activities. Prescott again uses animations to analyse the processes involved in the teaching strategy. Guided discovery is shown in a real teaching situation: a secondary school history lesson on the Black Death, where pupils work in groups using books to answer the teacher's set problems. Prescott draws attention to the use of 'how' and 'why' questions. Finally, students are asked to think about Reinforcement Menu as a strategy, and a 'laboratory' scene illustrates this by rewarding the children with two minutes play for each task completed.
