Footage description: | Opening brief shots of Stalybridge. Voice over, Geoffrey Roberts identifies characterstics of children's pre-reading experience in a working class enviroment. Shots of Mrs. Shaw in her living room reading to one child while another plays on his own. Mrs. Shaw explains their activities in nursery school. Shots of a playgroup in action. Children laying table, boy playing with penguin cut-out. Edward Milner, voice-over, interviews headmistress Mrs. Horsfield, about the relevance of sequencing games to reading. Shots of children playing with paint. Mrs.Callaghan reads a story chosen by one of the children. Roberts asks, voice over, what the differences are between home and school story telling sessions. A middle class suburb: Cheadle Hulme, Manchester. Street shots. Roberts introduces Mrs. Her and two of her three children. She reads to them in the nursery. Camera follows the children's movements and expression while Roberts comments voice over.The mother reads to the older child, Martin. Same study as before. Another sequence with the same family shows Mrs. Herriot with Martin and Russell, aged 4 and 5 respectively, making jam tarts in the kitchen. Finally the father joins the rest of the family at the tea table and the cakes are eaten and discussed. |
