Footage description: | Film shots of zinc ore being mined and separated by froth floatation. Commentary by Keith Williams. Williams introduces the programme. Keith Williams, using several graphic aids, explains how ore concentrates are prepared for the electrolytic extraction process. Williams next explains the electrolytic extraction process. Several graphic aids, animations and film of the process are used. Keith Williams, with the aid of several graphics, animations and film shots, examines the preparation for and operation of the blast furnace extraction process. Animations, in particular, explain the process in detail. Derek Fray discusses the need to purify the ores before they are introduced to either of the two processes. He begins with the preparation of a porous sinter for the blast furnace process. Fray shows samples of sinter and metallic furnace coke. Fray performs a series of demonstrations to show the effects of impurities in the ore concentrate on the electrolytic process. He uses copper, iron and cadmium impurities and explains the effect of each. Fray then points out how the impurities can be removed. Fray discusses the problems of pollution particularly with the electrolytic process and how these might be overcome. Williams and Fray compare the advantages of the two processes and speculate on which might be the process of the future. |
