Description
This programme examines the particular statistical technique of time series analysis and applies it to actual historical data - the baptism figures in Norway between 1735 and 1865. It is an animate...d film shot in colour and aims to guide students through the steps in the analysis of the trend, the regular and irregular fluctuations. No prior knowledge of statistics is assumed. O.U. students will be provided with the raw data on which the programme is based and some study of these figures will help in understanding the programme.

Footage description: Hammerton (voiceover) will use baptism figures in Norway to illustrate statistical techniques. Animated graph showing a scatter diagram. Again with the help of graphs she works through the argument for calculating the trend line. Hammerton moves on to the calculations involved in producing a curvilinear trend line for the scatter diagram. More animated graphs, tables etc. Cyclical fluctuations are also investigated, the resulting deviation values being plotted against the trend to produce an irregular fluctuations graph. Hammerton sums up on what data has been produced from the original raw statistics. She outlines how some of the results may suggest further lines of investigation, using burial figures for example. Stills of a cemetery. Credits.
