Footage description: | The programme begins with the voice of Jack Hulbert and the Barclays Bank cartoon. The cartoon relates, in humorous manner, the story of money from barter on. The cartoon continues discussing the concept of money and problems involved with it. Bar sequence shows Bittles using money for a purchase. Two film clips of barter in operation - one in immediate post war Germany, and New Guinea. Prints of other barter instruments. Bittles investigates the concept of acceptability, such as gold. Shots of gold ingots being made. Bittles outlines the history of coins, the practice of clipping and other problems. The difficulty of using a coinage based on a specific metal is mentioned. Bittles looks at how other commodities could be used. Over a film of money being printed, the concept and problems of token money, such as paper money, is discussed. Bittles cashes a cheque in a bank. She touches on the question of credit, cheques, etc. She sums up on the programme, and looks forward to the next. Credits. |
