Description
This programme is closely linked to the previous one in this series and it also examines the exchange scheme between Northcliffe School in Yorkshire and Dartington Hall in Devon. This film was sho...t at Northcliffe and starts by looking at the educational aims of the school from the point of view of the headmaster, Arthur Young. One of the things that emerges is the apparent similarities of objectives between Northcliffe and Dartington. Both lay stress on the values of democracy and freedom, pupil self-determination and so on. But, as in the previous film, the question of how this works in practice is asked interviews with pupils raise the issues of how a 'progressive' educational philosophy can work in a crowded state day school in a mining area. What the aspiration of the pupils are here and in what ways schooling, whether at Northcliffe or Dartington, can affect these.
