Footage description: | We see a child, Adam, reading with some difficulty; children in school; a psychologist carrying out a clinical interview and a conservation area experiment. Adam does this experiment with the psychologist and we see him playing with other children in the class room. A five year old child is shown doing some tests for the Stanford Binet Intelligence Scale and then a nine year old child. Adam is shown doing tests for a seven year old. His intelligence rating is shown in relation to other children of this age on a graph. This indicates that Adam's poor reading is something of a puzzle. A different range of tests is now used to explain this; these are for the Wechsler Intelligence scale. We see Adam doing these tests, now his performance profile can be separated and shows a discrepancy between his verbal and performance skills. Having found this, Adam's verbal skills are more closely examined by using the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities. He is shown to have difficulty with his visual sequential memory. Several shots of Adam at home. Mary Croxen, Adam's mother, is interviewed. She describes events in Adam's early life; events which she feels may have affected his ability to read. Adam and his brother are shown on the beach. The programme ends by stressing that in order to understand a child's development it is necessary to look at his personal history. |
