Footage description: Brian Trueman steps out of the Dr. Who time machine and introduces the programme. Bob and Francis Critoph, in their living room, explain why they wished to improve the heating in their home. Brian Trueman, using diagrams, works out the energy balance for the Critophs' house and goes on to discuss the economics of installing a new heating system. Trueman goes on to work out the cost of having the Critophs' loft insulated. Bob and Frances Critoph, in their living room, explain how they feel about their new heating system and what improvement plans they have for the future. Over still shots of an oil rig, coal mine, nuclear plant and wave power machine, Trueman speculates briefly on the availability of energy in the future. Film shots of experimental houses under construction at the Building Research Establishment. Trueman looks at the solar house and points out some of the advantages and disadvantages of solar heating. He goes on to examine a single solar panel and explains how this works. Trueman points out some of the pitfalls of installing solar panels in the roof of a house. Shots of Trueman walking around the site carrying a solar panel under his arm. Trueman, standing on a scaffolding and inside one of the houses at the Building Research Establishment, discusses some of the new forms of insulation and ventilation which may be available in the house of the future.
