Footage description: | Portrait of Liszt. David Wilde plays an extract from Liszt's Pastorale. Richard Middleton explains the sinnificance of Nature for 19th century Romantics. Print of Alpine scene. He describes the influence of Romanticism on Liszt, particularly the inspiration of Nature. He comments on the form of music like Pastorale, and quotes George Sand's opinion of Liszt's methods. Middleton describes the background to Liszt's Vallee d'Obermann (the score cover for which is shown). He quotes the passage by Senancour which inspired Lizst. Middleton plays the basic theme of the piano Vallee d'Obermann. A svmbol is displayed by which the theme will be later identified. He plays and describes extracts from three of the four sections that comprise the piece. Wilde plays Valleei d'Obermann. As they arise the four sections of the piece are captioned 'Lyric', 'Tempestuous', 'Climax', and 'Coda'. The theme symbol appears at intervals. |
