Footage description: | Film of the pot room at the Lynemouth aluminium smelting plant. Gerry Hancock introduces the programme. Over film shots of aluminium powder being offloaded at Blythe harbour, of the powder being taken off railway cars at the Lynemouth plant and of coke being unloaded and pressed into anodes, Hancock discusses the various inputs to the aluminium smelting process. Film of the pot room and of carbon anodes being cured and prepared for the smelter. Shots of power lines and the generating station on site. Commentary by Gerry Hancock continues to discuss the smelting inputs. Film of an electrolytic cell, known as the pot being constructed at the plant. Commentary by Hancock explains how this is done. Dick Black (Alcan Ltd., pot room manager) explains how operations in the pot room are monitored for maximum efficiency. He stands in the pot room while he talks. An animated diagram of a single pot illustrates its construction and also the smelting process. Commentary by Hancock explains what is happening. Film of the pot room and of electrolytic crust being broken in one of the pots. Shots of aluminium being syphoned from the pot to a crucible and of a carbon anode being replaced. Comment by Hancock describes these processes. Shots of the pot room and of a chimney outside the plant. Hancock and John Anderson (Alcan Ltd., Production Services Manager) discuss the control of fume emission, particularly fluorides from the plant. Anderson explains why the company is concerned about fume emission. Film shots of the plant's holding furnace where metal is alloyed. Shots of samples being taken for testing. Shots of large cylindrical ingots being cast, cut, and moved around the plant. Commentary by Hancock explains these processes. |
