| Footage description: | Spencer enters classroom and discusses a cut away model of an engine. He outlines the job he wants the pupils to achieve. Shots of pupils beginning to use kit to model part of the engine mechanism. Spencer gives advice. Marshall interviews Spencer on why he doesn't use traditional teaching methods about engine mechanisms. Shots of children in the playground pulling engine apart Spencer explains the kit he uses, outlining what is in it, how it can be fitted together etc. One early mechanism he uses is a hacksaw + engine. Back in the classroom, Spencer explains in detail the mechanisms involved in the hacksaw machine. He outlines the beginning of the model he wants the pupils to produce. General shots of children beginning their construction, with Spencer advising. More shots of children on their models. Spencer comments on the benefits of the method. After the first successful model has been completed, Spencer calls all the pupils round to explain some basic mechanisms in the model. He examines another successful model. Another model, this time of an overhead valve action is looked at. Over shots of numerous examples of the model, Marshall and Spencer discuss both the models and the teaching methods. Spencer discusses how the pupils enjoy it, problems that arise and the benefits to be gained. Credits over working hacksaw model. |
