Footage description: Newey introduces the programme from inside a factory making plastic piping. Shots of machinery. Mattick explains the nature of the project the pupils will undertake - assembling a propellor blade and motor. In the classroom, Mattick goes through the stages of the production process. The various stages are analysed and improvements suggested - such as one person doing more than one job. Other production run problems, such as stock flow, quality control are discussed. Shots of Mattick drilling holes. A production run is started. Shots of the die-caster, the relevant holes being drilled, the motor being assembled, etc. The run lasted for five minutes. Mattick looks at the results and he discusses with the pupils, problems, where improvements could be made etc. Mattick goes with the pupils to a factory using a similar industrial system. He explains the assembly part. Shots of various women working on the assembly line. Mattick next explains how a product, plastic tubing elbows, is manufactured. Shots of the machine in operation. He relates it to the pupils' own production system, problems etc. He describes briefly how the pupils reacted to the visit. Newey asks Mattick about another group of pupils who did the Christmas card project from the Industry Unit. Shots of pupils preparing and beginning exercise. Mattick discusses various aspects he introduced to make the exercise more realistic, Shots of pupils in action making the Christmas cards. The results of the exercise are discussed by Mattick in the classroom and with Newey. Various conclusions are drawn. Newey in factory store yard sums up on the programme.
