Using these extracts, Janet Richards shows how a scientific theory is arrived at by the accumulation of a l...arge number of factors, some of which are discarded, others used. In the case illustrated, Semmelweis and the discovery of the cause of Puerperal Fever, intuition and chance play an important part and these are acknowledged to be important elements in scientific methodology.
