Description
This programme looks at changes in food retailing since the last war, and traces the movement from many thousands of corner shops to the fewer large retailing outlets. It does this by examining ch...anges in demand - more women working, use of the motor car for shopping, greater requirement for convenience foods - and changes in local and national government legislation - planning permission controls, abolition of RPM (Retail Price Maintenance). The programme then goes on to examine the effects of these changes on the ownership of food retail outlets and the size of food retail outlets. Ownership of retail outlets is now in fewer hands. In the multiple sector of the market, five owners corner 2/3 of the multiple market; again amongst the symbol groups 2/3 of their trade is handled by the five biggest symbol groups; and in the Co-operative sector of the market, 1/3 of all trade is done by the five biggest societies. Size of retail outlets has increased dramatically and has enabled Product Diversification to occur, and a degree of Vertical Integration - that is, retailers doing more of their own wholesaling and in some cases their own production.
