Description
This programme is the seventh in a series of eight and, like all the others, is divided into three case studies filmed on location in the cities of Vancouver, British Columbia, Cracow, Poland and B...irmingham, U.K. This programme looks at a variety of planning procedures - Birmingham's plans for regenerating the inner city environment of Small Heath, tourism in Cracow as an example of a centrally planned industry and its impact on the urban structure and in Vancouver the common North American urban system of land use zoning is examined and how far this determines or merely reflects the major dynamics of the city. This programme has been remade to include an updating, by Allan Cochrane, acting Course Team Chairman, on the significance of recent events in Poland plus comment by Tim Sebastian, former BBC correspondent in Poland, on the nature of economic planning under the Gierek government and the role of tourism in future plans. We visit Birmingham again in 1985 and Allan Cochrane comments on the changes which have taken place in Small Heath, and to see how the claims of the planners have been realised in practice!
