Footage description: | The programme begins as Dorothy Slade, 86, is taken to hospital in an ambulance. She is adtmitted into the casualty department and then examined by several doctors. The consultant involved in the case describes the difficulties Miss Slade faced and explains his decision to bring her into the hospital. Miss Slade is taken for a blood test and X-ray and then moved to a new ward. The consultant comes to discuss her case with her and to advise her as to what he intends to do. Phil Ashby interviews Miss Slade to obtain her impressions of what was happening to her as she was brought to the hospital. The consultant describes the result of the X-ray which revealed a dislocated shoulder and a chipped bone. He lists some of the problems which Miss Slade will face if she does not exercise her arm. Miss Slade is shown exercising her arm with a physiotherapist guiding her. The consultant is seen checking on Miss Slade as he conducts his ward round. Miss Slade is shown again exercising with the physiotherapist. She is interviewed again. She describes how she is filling in her time at the hospital. An occupational therapist comes to help her dress herself. The consultant describes the results of the blood test which showed under activity of the thyroid gland. He then describes how Miss Slade has responded to treatment and the alternatives open to her when she leaves hospital. The programme ends with Miss Slade talking about herself and her family and her reaction to being in hospital. |
