Description
Some feminists have argued that rock music is by definition male and that there is no space within its conventions for women to express themselves. In this programme we look at three women's bands ...attempting to address themselves to the problems of sexual politics and popular music. The three bands, featured both in performance and interviews, are "Jam Today", "Tour de Force" and "The Raincoats". Broadcast notes provide short histories of these bands, line-up lists, and song lyrics, but basically "Tour de Force" uses traditional heavy rock to put over non-sexist songs to mixed audiences. "Jam Today" prefers playing their strongly feminist jazz-rock to female-only audiences. The more avant-garde "The Raincoats" are trying to overturn expectations of "easy listening" rock and the hierarchies and limited experimentations of traditional rock.
