Description
This programme examines how the number of known elements has changed over the years. Experiments from the following episodes in history are shown: - the primitive smelting of metal ores, - the 18th... century discovery of oxygen and nitrogen, - the discovery of chlorine, bromine and Iodine, - Davy's isolation of potassium and calcium, - the spectroscopic discovery of caesium and helium, - Ramsay's isolation of the inert gases, - the synthesis of elements by nuclear techniques. The programme is about the relationship between the available technology and discovery of groups of elements. It illustrates the interdependence of Science and Technology and lays a foundation for the next programme, which shows how the properties of elements have been used to organise them in a periodic way.
