This programme looks at the new telephone system called System X to see how the concept of feedback has been used in a large long-term industrial project. The rapid development of new microchip tec...hnology is seen to play an important part in structuring the manufacturing strategy to allow new developments to be incorporated whilst still allowing some stability of design. The simplest type of feedback is illustrated by the way components are tested by Plessey, one of the three contractors working on System X. Candidates for failure can be rooted out at source. Self analysing fault techniques are also used as a means of simple feedback. But more complex feedback techniques are needed in such a development project, and an example of how a codec microchip is developed in two stages is chosen to illustrate this. Freezing the design at a key stage is an important means of ensuring feedback. Finally, other factors like how external technology and changing costs are considered. Fibre optics is an example taken by Bill Tulloch, Site Manager of Plessey Taplow Court, to show how the design of systems must be able to accommodate such advances.
