Description
'Bridging the Gap' introduces students to the subject of structures and materials by giving some intuitive ideas of stress in materials. It examines the way in which material properties affect the ...shape or form of a structure by looking at man's various attempts to bridge the gap. The programme begins with Stonehenge and the 'lintel' before going on to show how the Lintel evolved into the 'Arch'. Presenter Adrian Demaid explains the principle of the arch by reference to a model as well as examples from Gothic Cathedrals to viaducts ending with an inverted arch the Suspension bridge.
