Description
We will be dealing with three topics from the unit, each of them concerning the wave properties of electromagnetic radiation, the wave properties of light. Now, I will start off by showing how the... aperture of an optical instrument affects its resolving power. This effect of aperture on the resolving power of an instrument is true of all optical instruments. As you know from the text the cause of this effect is because the light waves are being diffracted. Prof Eliot is going to discuss the diffraction pattern and the structure that is doing the diffracting. We tend to use X-rays for diffraction. Another part of your text is about polarized waves and use of the polariscope Polarized light can be used very effectively to study the behaviour of mechanical structures under stress. This happens to be one of the research interests of Prof Holister, the Dean of Faculty of Technology, we have asked the professor to demonstrate some examples of this very interesting technique.
