Description
This programme is about the results obtained in the students' home experiments involving the measurement of sulphur dioxide pollution and the collection and breeding of the fruit fly, Drosophila. ...Prof. Steven Rose discusses the 1973 SO₂ results as a function of geographical area, weather, environment and time of day and compares these results for those obtained in 1971. Pollution levels in 1973 were very low compared with 1971. This was mainly caused by readings being taken earlier in the year with better weather. Dr Peggy Varley similarly compares fruit fly distribution in 1973 with 1971. As in 1971 she notes the favourable effects of breeding the flies in rural areas and exposure of the fly breeding medium for longer times. Also, apparently, the flies are most common in the south west of the country and relatively scarce in Northern Britain. The most exciting result is the report on the parasites of Drosophila with new discoveries in various localities and a particularly interesting one in Northern Ireland.
