Sinead will discuss social and political changes in gender and sexuality since the Stonewall riots in 1969, which ignited an LGBTQ+ movement for equal rights and Pride marches across the globe. The... struggle for equal rights, from being out at work to same-sex marriage, have been hard won by the LGBTQ+ community. The OU has played an important role in advancing public understanding of gender and sexuality. This is reflected in our curriculum across the arts and social sciences. The Open University is at the forefront of studies on gender and sexualities, and cutting edge work on trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming experiences of the criminal justice system. We have made great progress in fifty years, but recent debates about the Gender Recognition Act, the placement of transgender prisoners, and whether children should learn about gay families in school tells us that there is still much more to do.
