It is estimated that half of the school-aged children in the world will not be able to read or write by the time they complete primary education. Teachers are the single most important factor, and ...effective teachers are in short supply. There are also many unqualified teachers and even qualified teachers can often feel poorly prepared. Since the start of the 21st century, the Open University has been working in collaboration with teachers, teacher-educators, researchers and government partners,as well as in schools serving urban slums and remote rural villages around the world. Through research, collaboration and innovation, we have developed award-winning large-scale teacher development programmes that are changing learning and changing lives in schools across South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. In this session, we meet leaders of International Teacher Education for Development (ITED) projects, who share first hand experiences and insights from working in some of the most challenging contexts, to improve learning for all.
