Description
John Lothrop Motley was an American author and diplomat. He served as US Minister to Austria from 1861 to 1867 and then to the UK from 1869 to 1870. During his term as Minister to Austria he worked with other diplomats to help prevent European intervention on the side of the Confederates during the American Civil War. Motley was the author of several histories, his most well known were 'The Rise of the Dutch Republic' and 'History of the United Netherlands'.
