Description
This case-study illustrates the way in which changing economic inducements have resulted in the adoption of a succession of different farming methods and in the introduction of new crops. Paul Ches...hire of the University of Reading looks at the swing to specialisation in cereals made by Mr Percy Pinner on his farm on the Cambridge/Huntingdon border. Mr Pinner shows us round his land and discusses why he gave up mixed farming. Ray Thomas of the Open University provides an introduction and conclusion which places this case in a more general context.

Footage description: Ray Thomas describes the move to specialisation in the last decade. He lists a few of the reasons for a farmer's decision to specialise. A graph shows the percentage decline in mixed farming over the years 1964-68, and diagrams are used to illustrate the points. Film of Pinner's Farm, Cheshire's voiceover describing. Cheshire interviews Percy Pinner and a picture of his early mixed farming procedure is built up. A map shows the crop pattern of the farm in the mid 1950s. The advantages of mixed farming are outlined. Sequences filmed on the farm. General shots of the farm. Pinner and Cheshire now discuss the reasons for the change to a greater degree of specialisation particularly as it applied to Pinner's own farm. Mr. Pinner itemises the changes that specialisation has introduced. All sequences are filmed on the farm. Map of Pinner's farm 1968 showing the change in the crop pattern over that of 1955. Percy Pinner lists the reasons for change. The advantages of specialisation are now outlined, as well as disadvantages. All sequences are filmed on the farm. Percy Pinner outlines some of the disadvantages in specialisation in greater detail. A comparison between lay (or mixed) farming and specialisation is indirectly drawn. Technical changes attendant upon specialisation are also listed and illustrations of the equipment are shown. Ray Thomas sums up the programme, offering a summary of the interview and its findings. A diagram is used to show the economic interdependence of mixed farming on one farm. Credits.
