Footage description: Castles introduces the programme which will deal with recent Swedish experiments in industrial democracy. Animated sequence of production line. Castles explains the experiments going on in Volvo, whose President, Pehr Gyllenhammer, outlines the management's thinking. The attitude amongst the workers is investigated - one or two are interviewed on their opinions. More shots of car assembly lines. The union representatives are also asked for their opinions. They both approve of the developments. More shots of car assembly lines. Palm expands on his criticism of the experiment which he sees as democracy from above and not real. He also outlines some of the practical problems. Palm in his room and shots of assembly lines. The views of the management, the workers and the unions are expressed, especially on the original impetus for the changes and how the experiments may develop. Shots of people being interviewed and car factories. Palm reiterates some of his criticisms of the experiments, but also sees how they can be turned to the real advantage of the worker, such as breaking union central organisation. Castles sums up on the industrial democracy in Sweden, seeing it in its role within the overall egalitarian society. Palm concludes with some positive benefits from the schemes. Credits.
