Description
This programme looks at some of the work of the Czech architect, Adolf Loos. Loos was a journalist and theorist of art, as well as an architect, and although most of his work is located in Austria,... Prance, Germany or Switzerland he was a great admirer of the British and American social systems, and through them the architecture of the two countries. From a series of elegant adaptations of Voysey or Mackintosh, set not in rural England but suburban Vienna, he moved to elegant and very individual plans remarkable for their use of pace. He was notable too for his sophisticated and sensitive use of materials. In the film, Tim Benton visits a number of his buildings including the "Knize" Gentleman's Outfitters and the Scheu house, both in Vienna..
