Footage description: | A problem is set involving a coin rotating around another similar coin. Joan Bliss is shown setting the same problem for a group of students in the studio. We see the students guessing at a solution to the problem. An animation shows the answer to the problem. Further animation explains the reason for the answer. Joan Bliss explains the result to the students, and sets a further problem with a smaller coin. We see the students attempting to solve this new problem. John Mason, using flashbacks of the studio seminar looks at the students reactions to the problems, and identifies several mental states involved in problem solving. Joan Bliss now sets two further problems for the students. The first involves their reaction times to a clock turned upside down. The second problem is, is there any time when the upside down clock shows a genuine time. An animated sequence explains the problem more clearly. We now see the students attempting to explain the answer to the problem. John Mason again examines the students reactions and psychological states. |
