Footage description: Pip Youngman demonstrates some aspects of the pin-jointed frame and polariscope home experiment. Peter Lucas, with a photograph of Stonehenge introduces the programme. Richard Fendrich uses pictures of roof trusses and railway signal gantries as well as a scale model of a crane to introduce his discussion on equilibrium of simple structures. Dick Fendrich then uses a simplified model of a crane and a drawing board to show the three basic parts which are in equilibrium. He calculates the moments and forces and explains how these are affected by tension and weight of the various crane components. Peter Lucas, with a drawing board and simple beam model, examines bending moment and shear force diagrams for a simple beam structure. He calculates these first for a uniform load and then for a point load. Film shots of a Hy-Mac 580 excavator undergoing a stability test in the field. The machine is brought to the point of tipping over.
