Footage description: Ron Johnson, voice over, introduces the programme which shows various reading activities taking place in Hurstead Infants School in Cheadle Hulme, Cheshire. First sequence shows a pre-school interview between the headmistress, Mrs Shaw and her daughter Melanie. Children in the reading area are seen choosing subjects selected from word cards kept in packets on a stand. They are then seen in the painting area painting their chosen subjects. Teacher captions the paintings and puts them on the wall, comments over explain the development of word recognition. A storytime session, using a large picturebook. Children cleaning and feeding the school guinea pigs. A large poster gives instruction, supplemented by books. A boy uses a commercial reader with the teacher. She explains how these readers into the school's general reading teaching strategy. Two girls read their own stories to the teacher, who discusses (voice over) the aims of the school's reading programme.
