Footage description: Geoff Roberts voice over throughout this programme, introduces the theme: how can children's spoken language be used in early reading. First two sequences are filmed in St. George's Infants School at Tydesley, Lancs. First we see Miss Walter helping children to work with work cards, building sentences in front of the class. A girl works individually with a sentence maker. Teacher reads a story made up by a four year old girl using a sentence maker. Brudenell Infants School in Leeds. Playground shots. Six year olds are seen using a projector without supervision. Kay Whiley comments on how they learn by invitation. A boy reads a commercial reader with the teacher. Work cards are maintained to show which texts each child has read. A girl reads a story written by one of her friends. The teacher helps her with 'O ' sounds. A girl works with letter clusters: constructing words from letters printed individually and in sound groups on cards. The teacher helps her put the words she has constructed into a story. Final sequence is in the school's 'talking corner', where children can go to tell stories or give instructions on how to make things, the material then being used in their own reading books. A West Indian girl reads a story she has written herself and by comparision a section from a reader. An articulate boy records a a story he has made up on tape, and later writes it out for the teacher. Another girl reads her own story.
