Footage description: | Valerie Denman, teacher at Rodings Central Primary School, Essex, talks to children in the top junior class about stories they enjoyed when they were five. Donald Moyle comments voiceover. Valerie explains the intention of the project: to get 10 year olds to write stories for 5 year olds. Shots of the group round a table, discussing the problems involved. A sequence showing the children at work on their stories. Mrs Denman gives encouragement and advice on endings. Mark reads his story to a group of infants to test their reaction. Mrs Denman comments in voice-over that this was unsuccessful because the group was too large. Children are introduced to Mr Eade from the Helena Romanes School in Dunmow, who explains the duplicating process to be used for printing the stories and inviting them to choose a suitable type. He also explains how the pictures will be laid out. The children finalise their stories. Mrs Denman talks to them about improvements they have made. Paul reads his completed story Snorter the Steam Train. The other children comment. The children visit Helena Romanes School where older pupils in the Commercial and Art Departments discuss arrangements for duplicating and printing the books. Shots of covers, card, type drawers and type body set up. Lino-cuts being prepared. Shots of printing machine working, finished covers being folded and story pages inserted and stapled. The senior boys and girls explain the processes to the 10 year olds. Mrs Denman sums up, commenting on the value of the project to the pupils. |
