Footage description: Programme opens with shots of lorries passing on a road with a broad grass verge. A school girl sitting on the grass explains how her school class came to do a project on the spraying of verges and fields, and the effect on wildlife. Headmaster Mr Brady, outside the school, elaborates and some boys are seen working on an experiment on the effects of salt and gravel. Classroom shots showing the senior class J4 who are about to leave for Secondary School having spent a year on the project. Rest of film is their description of their methods and findings. Class teacher Mr Keeling questions the children and gets them to draft letters to County Surveyors. Shots of various stages in drafting these letters, with examples pinned to the notice board. A girl, Suzanne, explains what replies were received and the action they took to find out about specified chemicals. Close up of "Approved products for farmers and growers 1971", sent by the Ministry of Agriculture. Suzanne explains they also wrote to important bodies like the Peak Park Planning Board as well as chemical manufacturers. Individual children use the library in the staff room to check on the harmful nature of chemicals on flowers and birds. Shots of them handling books and using indexes. Children in the work space compile maps and graphs using the information they have found. Shots of a group working on one aspect of the topic - noxious weeds. Mr Keeling explains what other groups studied. Shots of the contribution mounted in the School Hall by members of the class to interest the rest of the school. Letters, maps and pictures were used. Ian Moyle comments voice-over. Two visitors from the County Planning Office, Messrs. Bond and Swinscoe, discuss the project with the class. Finally two boys from the Junior 3 class describe how they intend to follow up the work of J4 next year.
