Description
Professor Christopher Harvie of Tubingen University discusses the problems of nationalism and liberalism which confronted the Emperor Franz Joseph in the last years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire a...nd discusses how economic and technological change helped keep the Empire together. Ultimately, however, those same developments led to to the Austrian defeat in the First World War and to the break-up of the Empire.
