Description
Prof Reuven Feuerstein escaped from imprisonment in Nazi occupied Roumania and fled to Israel. Here he began working for the Youth Aliyah, one of the main organisations responsible for bringing chi...ldren threatened by the Holocaust and 'rescuing' them from their past. He set up a child guidance centre for the organisation and made many optimistic discoveries about the capabilities of children affected not only by the horrors of the Holocaust but also by the confusion of integrating into a new society with new customs and language. Conventional intelligence testing showed many of these children to be able only to function at a very low level. Prof Feuerstein developed a battery of tests, LPAD tests, which were designed to test, teach and test again - with the tester acting as a mediator to the pupil, rather than simply as a remote arbitrator. He applied the same basic philosophy to a programme of ongoing teaching for the pupils, called Instrumental Enrichment. The programme uses various 'context free' approaches, emphasising the development of thinking skills with such devices as the Dot Tests / Comparison. Part of the programme is to bridge from these skills into everyday living, and everyday subject material. Prof Feuerstein's programme is used throughout the world in over 1500 classrooms in 25 different countries; even in England, at Pinewood School in Hertfordshire. Standards and teaching philosophies are kept strictly to the standards set by Prof Reuven Feuerstein at his Centre in Jerusalem, Israel.
